When I first heard the term, “The Fireman’s Rule”, I thought that I had surely stumbled upon a rule of law that would be of benefit to firefighters throughout the country. What I learned after a couple of hours of research was that this rule of law was of no benefit to firefighters, but instead served to benefit the property owner/occupant whose negligent acts or omissions may have been the primary cause of injuries to a firefighter while fighting a fire. In fact, the Fireman’s Rule operates to bar a fireman from suing a property owner/occupant when the acts or omissions of the property owner/occupant caused or contributed to injuries the firefighter received while fighting a fire on the premises of the owner/occupant

Lawyers on both sides are still slogging through the process of lawsuits that seek to invalidate one of the main provisions of the Obama administration’s healthcare reform. The Virginia lawsuit is moving more quickly than the more famous litigation with 20 state attorney generals on board, possibly because there are fewer plaintiffs involved.

George Orwell is credited as saying that, “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” Many law enforcement officials must deal with violent situations on a regular basis. Having TASERs in their belt gives them an extra tool to peaceably prevent more fighting, violent behavior, and even deaths. But can using a TASER on drunk, high, or other medically unstable people cause death? The American Medical Association (AMA) recently published a new policy about TASERs that states that TASERs, when used appropriately, “can save lives during interventions that would have otherwise involved the use of deadly force.” However, they caution that a standardized approach should be taken for medical evaluation for shocked individuals

Let me start in saying that I have the utmost respect for law enforcement officers, they have a tough job, and I personally have had a few run ins with the law, in my history I have never resisted an officer, or even disrespected them, as only a fool would do that. My grandfather developed the first “911″ type system in NY, my other grandfather was an FBI agent, I have a cousin who is on the Miami police force, I respect the job they do protecting us.
